By definition, a Democracy is a government of the people. As Senator Barbara Boxer argues, “Every citizen of this country who is registered to vote should be guaranteed that their vote matters, that their vote is counted, and that in the voting booth of their community, their vote has as much weight as the vote of any senator, any congressperson, any president, any cabinet member, or any CEO of any Fortune 500 Corporation.” read article

After reading Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: a Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, my eyes were opened to the depths to which pundits and conservatives will go to deceive Americans. Not only was the book incredibly informative, but it reported in such a hilariously sarcastic manner as to make it more of a page turner than The DaVinci Code. read article

I once had the opportunity to work with a fellow musician who happens to be an evangelical Christian. I say opportunity, because I personally lean so far to the left that it’s a wonder I don’t sometimes fall over, and getting to really know someone who shares beliefs so different from mine was educational to say the least. We went a good round on the abortion issue on more than one occasion, and every time we were both left intellectually blue-balled, because nothing puts the kibosh on a heated debate faster than evoking the word of God. read article

To the secular left, the controversies surrounding intelligent design might appear to emanate from some sort of parallel universe wherein the faithful have somehow turned postmodernism against us by accusing science of being pure ideology, a tool of its trade. read article

It has been three months since the now infamous Downing Street memos first began appearing in the British press. For many, these memos are the “smoking gun” necessary to prove that the Bush administration willingly deceived and manipulated the American public and the world along with UK accomplices in their case for war in Iraq. read article

Over the past quarter century, the debate over abortion has all but consumed our society. Many have given their lives, actively or passively, to further their cause. As a result, the debate over abortion cannot be viewed like many others. First, abortion is not only a moral issue, a debate over life and the taking of it, but a political one with political implications that cannot be nurtured in the vacuum of moral righteousness. Second, abortion concerns a very peculiar event, the birth of a human being: no other activity is comparable so connections to other rights through analogy or legal precedent are difficult if not misplaced. read article

I have seen the awkward stares they get on the subway, in the malls, on the city streets. Heads turn and looks linger, eyes boring holes into those who often feel they are but half a man, but a sad similitude of a woman. It’s no wonder depression is a norm. read article

If you are a “twenty-something”, like I am, your memories of the Cold War are strange and hazy. You experienced the Cold War during the 1980s when the era of nuclear threats, McCarthyist blacklisting and political expansionism had cooled off. Also, you were just a child, unable to absorb world events and political ideologies. Your Cold War education came from cartoons, movies and, to a lesser extent, elementary school. People would say “communist” but you didn’t know what it meant. You only knew it was bad and had something to do with factories. read article

The images of 1945 prevalent in the media this past week were indeed moving on an emotional level. Truly, the men and women who fought for victory in Europe deserve unending respect and thanks. However, it is problematic and disturbing that we honor the efforts of the soldiers of WWII but do not honor their vision. The veterans and the glorious dead fought under the banner of freedom, peace and prosperity. Their honor is our dishonor; for we have abused, manipulated and ignored these ideals. read article
